Lower Dolpo Trek

Lower Dolpo Trekking is a unique and picturesque adventure around the far remote western Himalayas. The trail follows dramatic country landscapes through lovely traditional villages adorned with age-old heritage cultures. An exciting walk within Nepal’s largest Shey-Phoksundo National Park is enriched with exotic flora and fauna. The walk takes you to beautiful Phoksundo Lake, also called Ringmo Lakes, due to its near location to Ringmo village.

At Phoksundo or Ringmo Lake, have time to enjoy a free day exploring scenic viewpoints. The Phoksundo lake is outlined by snow-capped peaks with rolling green hills, covered in lovely blue pine trees.    

After a magnificent time around Phoksundo Lake and Ringmo village, explore the immense cultures of Dolpo natives. The adventure leads towards the hidden pocket of Lower Dolpo to cross the high Baga-La and Numa-La Passes. Over-looking fantastic panorama of Dolpo scenic landscapes with towering snow peaks, as far as Dhaulagiri Himal towards the east direction. After being around sheer mountain wilderness, the route follows Dho Tarap Chu Valley and its nice village of Dho Tarap. 

On entering the longest valley of the Dho-Tarap Chu River, and then reaching into a deep gorge. Interesting areas with grassy meadows of Yak herder’s camps with views of lovely waterfalls. 

The walk leads to an open country to reach a historical old fortress village at Tarakot. In Tarakot with time to visit its impressive monasteries, then the adventure comes to an end. On reaching a large town at Dunai, the headquarters of Dolpo district, from here short drive to Jhupal. 

For the last overnight halt around Dolpo and Far West Nepal, the next morning a swift flight brings you to Kathmandu. On reaching Kathmandu via a connecting flight from Nepalgunj airport, after a most exciting adventure and experience around Lower Dolpo Trekking.

Best Seasons for Lower Dolpo Trekking: 

The best times for Lower Dolpo trek are late spring, autumn. The high seasons for trekking around the Himalayas. Most days are clear for views and pleasant walks. The spring season from late March to May,
when days are best for and walks. But can get overcast with light rain and snow sometimes. Cold morning and night time during the spring season.The next best season is autumn from September to November, it is also the peak seasons for trekking around the Himalayas. Clear day for views and pleasant walks, sunny days most of the time in autumn. But gets dark soon, due to short sunlight hours, cold morning, and late afternoon till nighttime. Can expect snowfall above 2,500 m high.

Itinerary

Arriving in Kathmandu and Nepal International Airport, our guide and staff receives you for a short transfer to your hotels. Then check into your nice rooms at given time meet with other trekking members for trek briefing.
Regarding Lower Dolpo Trekking, with dos and don’ts as well information on Responsible Tourism. Evening a group welcome dinner in a nice Nepali Restaurants, a great introduction to Nepali foods and cultures.

In Kathmandu free day to enjoy individual activities and preparation for the trek to Lower Dolpo. Interested people have the options for tour around Kathmandu and Nepal famous sites and landmarks.

As time for flight to Nepalgunj for Lower Dolpo trek, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport. For short scenic flight to Nepal Far South West, at Nepalgunj, a city of great Indian influence. Due to the close borders with India, an interesting city to explore in the afternoon time.

Early breakfast for connecting flight to Jhupal, Dolpo, after 40 minutes on air, land at Jhupal small airport. Received by our trekking staff that has traveled here taking a long overland drive and walks, from Jhupal at present a motor road has been constructed connecting Dunai the main headquarter town of Dolpa area.
From Jhupal a short drive of more than an hour ride to Dunai for overnight stop, in the comfort of nice local lodge, afternoon walk around Dunai town an interesting place to observe its culture and way of daily life.

After overnight in Dunai, morning walk past market crossing a bridge over Thulo Bheri River and then climb over a ridge to Phoksundo River valley with views of Kagmara peak, from here trek leads downhill passing farm villages with walnut trees close to a stream at Dhera, a small cattle herders settlements, from here a short climb to Raha Gaon village of Thakuri a Hindu local tribe, then downhill walk into forested area to reach overnight camp at Chhepka a small farm village.

From Chhepka near Ankhe area, morning walk with short climb and descend through forest reaching a river bank, from here climb on leaving the forest, from the top walk downhill to forested area leading upstream to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, trek further to Samduwa for overnight stop near the entrance of Phoksundo National Park.

Morning walk leads to our first destination at Phoksundo Lake after Pungmo Khola valley and crossing streams, following Pungmo Khola downhill into pine and birch trees to reach at upper side of Phoksundo Khola, after a short break continue walk to Ringmo village, an interesting village of Tibetan origin with mud plastered Chorten and Mani (prayer) walls.
From here a short walk to Phoksundo Lake for overnight camp by the shore of beautiful turquoise Phoksundo Lake.

An ideal spot for rest day, marvel the beautiful views of surrounding landscapes and peaks of Kagmara, or visit interesting Ringmo village and walk by the lake side.

From Phoksundo Lake and nice village of Ringmo, the route leads towards remote areas within mountain wilderness. Far from villages and human settlements for few days, except for some Yak herder’s camps. Morning walk follows towards at the base of Baga-La and Numa-La Passes. The route follows south amidst dense forest, then reaching a yak herder summer pastures with shelters at Timche.

Start early morning after good breakfast for the long day to cross Baga-La, the first high pass of the adventure. The climb stats with steep up following a ridge lines all the way to the top of Baga-La. For the hard effort, rewards with marvelous views of Phoksundo Lake, Kagmara and Kanjibrora peaks.
After a refreshing scenic stop, then downhill on the other side of Baga-La for overnight camp. Setting the camp on nice meadow known as Danigar a Yak herder’s camp and shelter.

Another last pass to cross and the highest point of the adventure, after breakfast a short gradual walk. Then reach at the base of Numa-La pass, start the climb with for few hours on top of Numa-La Pass. On reaching at the highest spot, enjoy the dramatic scenery facing views of snow-capped peaks with beautiful landscapes.
Includes views as far as Dhaulagiri Himal range towards east, after an exciting scenic views downhill to the base of Numa-La for overnight camping.

Enjoying the adventures, around sheer wilderness, from here the route leads towards human habitation and villages. Morning starts on a gradual winding path, as walk follows through tall blue pine and fir trees. Enjoy the pleasant walk on winding path, the reaching a wide open area at Tarap Chu River. Then a short walk towards a large village of Dho Tarap inhabited by a mixed mountain tribes of Tibetan origin. As well as Magar people the main hill tribes of western Nepal. Overnight camp near the village farm land, with time to explore the village and monastery.

From here a long descend to Tarap valley, one of the largest and longest valley of Dolpo area which is about 20 k.m. which stretches following Tarap Chu River most of the way to joins with Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village, walk leads past Langa with beautiful cascading waterfalls heading due south following the trail after Sisal and small place of Kesila around Yak herders temporary camps to reach our overnight camp at Gyagar.

Today walks on Tarap nice valley, as the trail enter into a narrow gorge with some vegetation of bushes of juniper and wild rose, walk leads past Tol-Tol with a large overhanging cave, around this area might see some wild life like Naur or Blue Sheep and other mammals.
As the walk progress reaching a confluence of River Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, overnight camp by the river after a long day walk of about 6 hours.

Start morning walk passing smaller villages and then into a small wooded area, following river all the way at Tarakot, a large and interesting village with old history and well maintained terraced farm fields, Tarakot with an old historical fortress (Dzong or Kot) guarding the village.
Tarakot village houses famous old Sandul Gompa located at junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River where the overnight camp is placed.

After a great time at Tarakot, our last day walk leads to Dunai for short while and then taking a short drive to Jhupal for the flight back to Kathmandu.
Morning starts following many spread out villages and farmer’s huts, walking on wider trail with some short uphill and downhill towards Thuli Bheri River valley to reach at Dunai, on reaching Dunai time permitting having lunch. From here jeeps drive to Jhupal to catch our next morning flight to Nepalgunj.

An early morning short walk to Lukla Tenzing & Hillary Airport to catch the flight back to Kathmandu. Board on a smaller aircraft for sweeping flight to Kathmandu,
on reaching Kathmandu Airport. Transfer to your hotels, rest of the day at leisure
for individual activities.

A free day for individual activities, as well as to explore the heritage and cultural sites of Kathmandu. One can enjoy shopping for souvenirs of Nepal, from rugs, pashmina shawls to various handicrafts. This day is especially reserved as contingency in case of flight delay / cancellation in Jhupal or vice-versa.
Due to unfavorable weather condition, happens sometimes, even in best time of seasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lower Dolpo a difficult trek?

A moderate to adventurous with steep ups and downhill, one of the best and perfect walks around the Himalayas. Trekkers must be aware that Nepal and Himalayan landscapes are all ups and downhill. The only flat land is in the southern Terai belt of Nepal, walking slow and steady will overcome the difficulty. 

The only tough walk is climb over Baga-La and Numa-La, on the highest point of the adventure. Rest of the walk is pleasant on winding gradual downhill.
Taking time and having short rest will be good to enjoy the uphill walks.

Is Dolpo a popular adventure destination?

The Dolpo region, is not as popular as other mainstream areas of main trekking routes, like Everest and Annapurna region. Due to its remote location, but slowly gaining more trekkers over the past few years.

What do we expect on this Trek?

A lovely and scenic country walk, soaking amidst local impressive cultures, and walking into lovely forested trail. Lined with tall spruce, blue pines and fir trees,

Are there facilities for electricity, internets and WI-FI?

The trek to Lower Dolpo, nearly all lodges on overnight stops, have electricity facilities either run by Hydro or solar power. Trekkers can charge their electronic items on paying extra for charging each gadgets. Few lodges offer Wi-Fi and Internet services while some places might charge extra.
But the connection in some places is poor and disturbing, takes time to run the service either in long distance call or using the internets.
